PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND CUNNING ISSUES
A baguillion has between 56 and 58 facets. Sometimes baguillions are cut in a tapered baguette shape with the longer ends narrowing down in a way that is similar to tapered baguettes. These are called tapillions.
MARKETS AND MARKETING
Baguillion have been advertised in consumer magazines such as Mirabella, Elle and Tanity Pair, primarily for engagement ring stones in the total weight range of one-third to .50 carats. Best-selling rings are in the 1.75-carat to 2-carat total weight range, but smaller ones, 1.25 to 1.50, are also good sellers. These baguillions would generally be from 4.5 mm to 5 mm long.Tapillions are available at about 25 points, or 50 to 75 points for a total weight matched pair. They are much in demand and often go to high-end retailers.
PRICING AND SUPPLY
Not all baguette rough can be cut into baguillions. The rough for baguillions is more like marquise rough, that is, it is long but must have a certain depth. The rough used is too skinny for an emerald-cut diamond and too heavy for a baguette; it is the same kind of rough that is used for brilliant cuts. Rough for baguillions is not always plentiful. Typical sizes are 3 mm to 8 mm. Rough for 4 mm is difficult to find; for 5 mm and larger it is scarce. Typical carat weights are 8-pointers to half-carats with 10- to I5-pointers making up the bulk of the market.

They are sold to manufacturers and also directly to retailers. A well-cut pair of baguillions may sell for between $4,000 and $6,000. The yield for baguillions is low, from 35 to 38 percent.

WHAT BUYERS SHOULD LOOK FOR
Baguillions are difficult to match and, since they are often used as side stones, clashing is always a concern. The makes have to be absolutely right. A baguillion needs a heavy back to give it life. Look for even brilliance, similar to a Princess cut, and good proportions.
